Solar Energy Guide

Your Energy.
Your Power.

Learn how a modern photovoltaic system works, how solar energy is produced, how the system is sized and why energy storage can play an important role in maximizing self-consumption and savings.

Section 01

How Does a Photovoltaic System Work?

From solar radiation to electricity consumption in your home, every component of the system has a specific role.

☀️

Solar Panels

Solar panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC) through the photovoltaic effect. Modern n-type TOPCon panels can achieve high efficiency and continue producing energy even under cloudy conditions, with reduced output.

Inverter

The inverter converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC), making the electricity suitable for household appliances. Hybrid inverters can intelligently manage energy between the panels, battery, loads and grid.

🔄

Net Billing

Under the current Net Billing framework, electricity that is consumed while it is being produced has the highest value. Surplus energy can be exported to the grid according to the applicable market framework.

01

Sun

Solar radiation reaches the photovoltaic panels.

02

Panels

The panels generate electricity in DC form.

03

Inverter

DC electricity is converted into AC electricity.

04

Home

The generated energy is used by your electrical loads.

Section 02

System Sizing & Performance

Correct sizing takes into account your electricity consumption, available roof space and expected annual solar production.

5–6 m² Approximate roof area required per 1 kWp on a tiled roof.
1,350–1,550 kWh Indicative annual production per kWp in Greece.
22–23% Indicative efficiency range for modern TOPCon panels.
🏠

Required Space

Approximately 5–6 m² are required for every 1 kWp on a tiled roof. A flat roof may require approximately 8–10 m² to reduce shading between the panels.

📈

Annual Production

In Greece, 1 kWp of installed capacity can produce approximately 1,350–1,550 kWh per year. Actual production depends on location, orientation, tilt and shading.

🧭

Orientation

A south-facing orientation generally provides high daily production, while an east-west orientation can distribute production more effectively between morning and afternoon.

25+ Years of Panel Performance

Photovoltaic systems are designed as long-term investments. Solar panels have no moving parts, which helps minimize mechanical wear over time. Leading manufacturers commonly provide long-term performance warranties, while inverter warranties and service life vary by manufacturer and model.

Section 03

Energy Storage & Savings

Batteries can increase self-consumption by storing solar energy produced during the day and making it available when it is needed.

🔋 Do I Need a Battery?

In a Net Billing system, a battery can help maximize self-consumption by storing surplus solar energy instead of exporting it immediately to the grid.

  • Store excess daytime solar energy
  • Use stored energy during the evening
  • Support electric vehicle charging
  • Provide backup power with compatible equipment

☀️ Solar Panels + Battery

Combining photovoltaic panels with battery storage can increase the utilization of the energy produced by the system and improve energy independence.

  • Higher self-consumption
  • Better use of daytime solar production
  • Lower dependence on grid electricity
  • Greater flexibility in energy management
85–90% Indicative potential reduction in electricity costs in suitable installations.
4.5–9 years Indicative investment payback range, depending on system and consumption profile.
100% Solar energy consumed at the time it is produced can directly cover household demand.

*Savings and payback figures are indicative and depend on consumption profile, production, equipment cost and the specific operating conditions of each installation.
